Omnichannel effectiveness in U.S. credit unions

Which digital channels convert, and the role of email. Channel-by-channel evidence on engaging members toward provable product conversion.

Summary

U.S. credit unions have won the adoption battle and are losing the conversion one. Members run their everyday banking through screens, yet the digital channels that carry the most traffic are not, on their own, the channels that most reliably turn intent into a funded product.

The study ranks five consumer digital channels (the logged-in online banking portal, the mobile app, the public website, email, and SMS) on their ability to drive a provable product conversion: a funded account or an approved credit facility. Authenticated, in-session channels complete conversions; the public website acquires and leaks; and email does its most valuable work earlier in the journey, where last-touch attribution does not see it.

Key findings

  • 87% of checking-account holders were active digital users in 2025, yet institutions abandoned 3.36 digital checking applications for every one they completed.Cornerstone Advisors and Alkami, 2026 Digital Banking Performance Metrics
  • About 84% of credit union online-application abandonments occur at a single step: field-of-membership eligibility.RC Strategies, relaying CUCollaborate / Ser Technology and CUNA data
  • 45% of digitally acquired accounts close within three months; about 40% remain open after twelve.Curinos, Digital Account Opening, 2026
  • Email is credited with about 12% of digital conversions under last-touch attribution, but opens an estimated 41% of conversion journeys, more than any other channel.Kraus Advisors estimates, documented in Appendix A
  • Journey-based, triggered banking emails convert at about 11.7%, against roughly 2–5% for broadcast campaigns.MoEngage, Email Marketing Benchmarks 2025
  • Digitally engaged customers hold an average of 4.4 products with their primary institution, against 2.7 for the unengaged.RFi Group, cited in The Financial Brand

Method

The study combines published benchmarks (Cornerstone Advisors and Alkami, Curinos, MoEngage, RC Strategies, TextUs and others; 15 sources in all) with Kraus Advisors analyst estimates. Each estimate, including the channel effectiveness index, channel shares under last-touch and first-touch attribution, and completion rates by product, is documented with its assumptions in Appendix A so it can be re-weighted against an institution's own data.
